100 Athletes Honored at Marbridge Sports Banquet

On Sunday, September 23, Marbridge honored 100 athletes that participated in 10 sports: basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, equestrian, golf, softball, swimming, track & field, and volleyball. Each athlete from the 2017-2018 season was awarded a trophy while coaches, unified partners, volunteers, and loved ones enjoyed a buffet lunch. Scott Cary, Hays County Justice of the Peace and longtime Marbridge Special Olympics coach acted as the Master of Ceremonies. Cary brought energy and laughter to the event with his wit and humorous jokes between award announcements. 

The theme of the banquet and messages was living health and wellness every day by staying active and incorporating healthy eating choices. After recently reviewing IPP goals for the campus, Marbridge used the sports banquet as a great starting point for a year of Health and Wellness for exercising and maintaining a healthy weight. During the Marbridge Symposium this past spring, keynote speaker Tim Shriver, Ph. D., Chairman of the Board of Special Olympics, expressed his concern for special needs athletes nationwide struggling with obesity, and not making great nutrition decision like drinking sodas, and eating unhealthy snacks.. The health initiative rolled out during the sports banquet for the resident athletes encourages them to eat healthier and avoid sodas and sweets. Judge Cary did a great job of stressing the importance of healthy eating by adding healthy jokes to the program.

Top award winners for the day were Bill C. and Robert D. Bill won the Dorothy L. Smith Community Service Award for his hard work as an athlete and all the volunteer work he does on campus and with other athletes. Robert was awarded the prestigious Phillip Bunton Award recognizing the athlete that worked the hardest in the past year. Robert participated in four sports, and he is an extremely hard worker on campus and does an outstanding job in all his classes.

Special thanks to Dr. Tina Kien, Ph. D., Director of Career Services for Intercollegiate Athletics at The University of Texas, for bringing a large group of athletes to present trophies to the residents. Residents were also joined by UT Mascot, Hook’ Em, when receiving their awards. Elena Bruckner, UT Track and Field, and Chase Moore, UT Football, were the guest speakers for the day and both stressed the importance of working hard, overcoming obstacles, setting goals, and eating healthy.

Marbridge accepts and repurposes previously used trophies from the sports in which we participate, replacing nameplates for our residents.
