From hygiene skills to market math, residents receive a variety of life-skill-based training. With training in shopping, cooking, money management, healthy eating choices and much more, the goal the Life Options Program is to enable residents to reach the highest level of personal independence possible in their daily routines. Our academic classes often combine reading and math into one training session, which helps residents develop practical skills, enabling them to function more independently. The basic concept is to learn to apply reading and math skills to real world situations. Strengthening reading skills helps residents better understand the written communications of everyday life, such as product labels.
Abilities Centered Training (ACT)
The Marbridge Training & Education program is based on the abilities-centered training philosophy called the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, developed by Howard Gardner, Ph.D., Professor of Education at Harvard University, and begins with the expectation that each individual is able, and our job is help determine existing abilities and encourage the next step in growth. We tailor our training to help residents define their strengths and increase their skills which, in return, helps build their confidence and encourages them to try new things. Unlike traditional education, we do not provide grades or graduation. Instead, we continue to support the individual through a variety of classes, social opportunities, connections and education. We offer approximately 50 training opportunities on a trimester basis and adjust our curriculum as needed. Some classes, such as cooking and public transportation, can be mastered at which point we encourage the individual to try something new. All residents are encouraged to take exercise classes, join a sports team and try something they have never tried before, such as ceramics, gardening or drum therapy.
