Recreation & Leisure Coordinator/Coach

We currently have an opening for a Recreation & Leisure Activities Coordinator/Coach at our non-profit organization which serves a wide range of awesome individuals with intellectual differences! Position Summary:
Lead and coach a variety of exercise classes and Special Olympic sports to adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Plan, organize and participate in recreation and leisure activities that promote the safety, well-being, and happiness of Marbridge residents. Work as a team with other Recreation and Leisure Coordinator/COACH and other instructors. Ability to work early mornings, late evening and occasionally travel for Special Olympic events. Travel will include overnight stays requiring assisting residents with basic hygiene and supervising medication administration.
Hours:
Hours are Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm. There will be opportunities for overtime if attending activities such as Texas Football games, Fiesta Texas, Sea World, annual Christmas Program, Basketball tournaments, and other Special Olympics competitions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and coordinate leisure and recreational activities including sports activities on campus, leisure time activities on campus, community outings and activities and coaching Special Olympic sports (sports may include Track & Field, Bocce, Basketball, Bowling, Equine, Golf, Softball, Cycling and/or swimming).
  • Teach weekly exercise classes; may include Elder Sports, Cardio, Walking, Weightlifting, Soccer, Pickleball, etc.
  • Teach a class of men’s health and hygiene to a group of residents with a variety of abilities.
  • Plan community outings and activities based on resident interest, resident goals and ensuring the activities are diverse and cover a multitude of recreation-based options. Outings may occur outside of normal hours to include nights and weekends.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Exhibit patience in all circumstances including 1:1 and large group settings.
  • Ability to drive 15-passenger shuttle and 12 passenger van in addition to typical vehicles such as sedans and minivans.
  • Provide input on resident’s progress in class including weekly attendance logs, updates during weekly T&E staff meetings, entries in Point Click Care database and direct feedback to the Director of T&E and the community directors and assistance directors when appropriate.
  • Supervise residents in all class activities. This includes on and off campus activities. Handle minor behavioral problems and report any problems to the Director of Training & Education immediately.
  • Obtain all necessary material and equipment needed to teach assigned classes. All request for materials should be made to the Director of Training & Education during the yearly budget process or as needs arise.
  • Begin all classes on time and avoid early dismissal unless approved by the Director of Training & Education ahead of time.
  • Assist and encourage residents to improve socially, physically, emotionally, and cognitively. Provide feedback for residents Individual Program Plan (IPP) process.
  • Attend and participate in weekly Training & education staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Remembers the importance of providing residents with services and attitudes that ensure their safety, well-being, happiness and support the development of the whole person – physically, mentally, and spiritually.
  • Abides by all Texas State driving laws and standards when operating a Marbridge vehicle.
Equipment to Be Used:
  • Company vehicles (15 passenger shuttle, 12 passenger van, sedan, mini-van)
  • Sports equipment
  • Computer, laptop, copier, other various office equipment
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to work in various conditions, including outside during the Texas Summer heat.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand and walk for long periods of time, participate/hands on coach various sports.
  • Normal range of hearing and vision required.
Education, Experience & Skills Required
  • Must be at least 21 years of age with a valid Texas Drivers License and a clean driving record
  • Bachelor’s degree in physical education, Therapeutic Recreation, or related Field OR equivalent experience in the field
  • Previous teaching and coaching experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of the basics and rules of a variety of sports
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
