Marbridge is a non-profit residential community for adults with intellectual disabilities. The community strives to provide excellent care and life skills training to its residents at a cost that is affordable. Each year, we must raise money to close the gap between income and cost of services, leaving little left over for capital projects and improvements. Currently Marbridge residents use an unheated, un-airconditioned gymnasium facility that is more than 40 years old and is too small to meet the needs of our residents.
The center will encompass approximately 18,100 square feet, which will include a gymnasium, a stage area, an exercise center, classroom facilities, meeting rooms and staff offices, along with ample storage space.
The gymnasium will serve as an athletic facility for our teams to practice for Special Olympic competitions. It may also be used as a competitive arena, where practice scrimmage games may be played, or where Marbridge may host future Special Olympic events. The workout area will serve as a wellness center where our residents can improve overall health and fitness by utilizing treadmills, free weights and other exercise equipment that is currently housed in our old gymnasium. The classroom facilities will be used for Nutrition and other Life Skills training provided to Marbridge residents. Meeting room facilities may be used by staff, volunteers or community groups. The stage will be used for performances, such as our annual Christmas program.
Yes, the athletic and events facility will be made available to community groups, school groups, scouts and church and civic groups for a wide range of uses that fit within the overall mission of Marbridge. The annual Christmas program and other performances by Marbridge residents are attended by many people from the surrounding community.
Our goal is to complete the structure by the summer of 2012. Depending on available funds, the facility may be constructed in phases, with the gymnasium as Phase I. The stage, offices, meeting and training rooms may be included in Phase 2.
The estimated cost of the entire project is approximately $2.62 million. The Marbridge Board of Trustees will procure a minimum of three qualified bids for the project. The building is projected to cost in the range of $116 per square foot, or about $2.1 million. The remaining budget covers site preparation and architectural and engineering work.
